Men Just Want to Have Fun, Too!
There's no doubt that laughter, relaxation and staying active can help keep you young. The male answer to The Red Hat Society, The Hard Hat Brotherhood is "an international organization of men who get together for fun and to have a good time doing guy stuff." And the fun starts with their motto: TESTOSTERONE: Our Guys Are Full of It! Although the Brotherhood is open to men from 18 to 118, most members are men over 50 who need a break from everyday life, are burned out from work, obligations or life in general and just plain need to have some fun.
Our Gang
Founder and Head Hard Hat Andrew (Andy) Smith started the organization so adult men could make friends and enjoy life rather than just passing through it, as he feared he was doing as a husband with self-proclaimed "couch-potatoitis". When his wife formed her own chapter of The Red Hat Society, he was thrown together with some of the other husbands and discovered they had a great time together. He realized that while most young boys are part of a "gang", whether it's boy scouts, a sport, band, science club, cars or poker night, those treasured kinds of camaraderie tend to slip away in later years.
Band of Brothers
Hard Hats members are men from all walks of life and all occupations and professions. Their symbol is the hard hat, chosen for its recognizability and "manliness". Membership has spread across the U.S. and as far away as Australia, Barbados, Canada, England and Nigeria — including the Nomads, a group of truckers, snowbirds and RVers. Anyone can join or start a chapter, called a "crew". There are no official rules, no formal meetings, and no book of regulations. Groups simply enjoy a night out, activities, events or trips … whatever they deem to be fun, from chili cook-offs, to fishing, poker, racing or softball. The international organization has a buddy board so members with similar interest can communicate online, and it's a great place to network. General membership is free.
