Matrixyl: Another Way to Wage War on Wrinkles
Here’s a skin cream ingredient that fights signs of aging on a molecular level.
Whenever you start to read about techniques to erase fine wrinkles and reverse the signs of aging on your face, it isn’t long before you come across the phrase “collagen production.” Wrinkles appear because we have less collagen in our skin as we age, and they disappear when the skin is stimulated to produce more collagen, smoothing out the wrinkling and making the skin more supple.
Matrixyl, the brand name for palmitoyl pentapeptide-3, has been used successfully in anti-wrinkle creams because it’s one of the peptides that seems to work well in stimulating collagen production. Its boosters claim it’s so effective that it can replicate the results of Botox more inexpensively and without needles. Originally developed to help wounds heal, Matrixyl regards aging skin and wrinkles as needing healing, too. When the deep matrix layers of the skin are stimulated to produce more collagen, wounds—and wrinkles—can heal faster.
One of the best known commercial products to make good use of Matrixyl is a Canadian concoction called NeoStrata, which, at least in one published study by a Canadian cosmetic dermatology association, delivered a reduction in wrinkles of up to 78 percent after 12 weeks of use. Neostrata contains 5 percent Matrixyl and at that strength has also been found to be more effective than Strivectin-SD, another popular anti-wrinkle formulation.
As always, it’s good to be at least a bit skeptical of studies that promise miracle results, and your results may vary, buy Matrixyl-based products are worth a serious look as you continue to seek out ways to erase those annoying fine wrinkles.
